When it comes to the aesthetic appeal of the lawn, the garden is central. The pathways interwoven between flower beds, however, are equally as important. When designing a landscape or garden pathway, there are lots of materials to choose from. Flagstone is a unique and beautiful choice, and one we recommend at Canada’s Gardenland. Here’s everything you need to know about this one-of-a-kind sedimentary rock:
What Is Flagstone?
Flagstone is a general term used to describe large, jagged, and moisture-deflecting slabs of rock. The rocks are durable, non-porous, and vary in thickness from half an inch to over an inch. These are often used outdoors in pathways and patios, pieced together like a unique natural puzzle. Because of its distinct look, flagstone is a highly sought-after landscaping material.
What Are the Benefits of Flagstone?
- Low Maintenance. Compared to other rocks, like limestone, flagstone requires little to no maintenance, and repels most organic debris and stains. Flagstone can be washed with a pressure washer or soap and water without damaging the rock.
- Gives a “Natural Look.” Some materials, like asphalt, cement, or limestone, are only available in a generic dark grey or black colour. Flagstone can vary in colour, from brown to dark purple, and generally gives off an earthy tone.
- Installing flagstone takes precision and attention to detail. Fortunately, this rock is so durable, it’ll only need to be installed once. You won’t be wasting time or money redoing your walkways with flagstone.
- Can Be Personalized. Part of what makes flagstone unique is not the rock itself, but what goes between the rocks. Customers can choose between grass, moss, or a hardy ground cover to accentuate the spaces between the flagstone. It’ll give your lawn a look like no other.
Flagstone is requested in two general styles:
Formal Layout. This style consists of rocks cuts into rectangles or squares aligned in an organized but random pattern. The rectangle shapes provide continuity, while the different sized rocks give it a unique look.
Informal Layout. This style is perfect for customers looking for a more organic, casual experience. The rocks, which range in size significantly, are arranged randomly. Unlike the formal layout, which has little or no space between the rocks, the informal style allows for moss or grass to be added between.
