When building flagstone walkways and driveways, our secret to success is a well-prepared sub-base and base. Usually, we spend the whole day just preparing a stable and properly leveled foundation following this procedure:

1. We start by excavating a minimum of 6” (15 cm) beyond the desired finish grade (the excavation depth can vary depending on flagstone thickness, sand layer and depth of base material) and creating a minimum of 2% slop away from structures.
2. Then, we assess the existing sub-base (the arear beyond 6”). If the existing sub-base is wet, we will substitute 2-8” of it with crushed stone; and if the sub-base is rather dry, 2” of it will be replaced by angular sand.
3. After that, we add and rake 2-4” of the aggregate base material until flatten.
4. And afterwards, we compact the base and remove any remaining undulations. The base is ready.

When base is ready, we install plastic edging (securing it with the spikes that penetrate deep into the aggregate base), which will restrain the flagstones. Then, we start pouring concrete and using shovels and other tools to make sure that there are no voids and to screed and smooth the surface. When the concrete base is dry, we begin laying flagstone individually by applying small amounts of wet concrete under each piece. Then, what is left is to fill up the joints with the same wet concrete (or polymeric sand), and the job is complete. We follow the same procedure when installing flagstone walkway, patio, driveway, or landing area.
